You do not have to wait for a dramatic trial to follow Christ. Your cross often waits already, close at hand.

Perhaps this looks like patience with someone who tests your temper daily. Perhaps this looks like forgiving a wound you carry from years ago. Perhaps this looks like a responsibility you keep avoiding, or a habit you know deserves to end. Perhaps this looks like trusting God with a situation you want to control, or choosing the right thing when the easier path sits right beside you.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO CARRY?

The Invitation

Peter wants Jesus to succeed. He wants a Messiah who wins, not one who suffers. So when Jesus tells the disciples He will go to Jerusalem, endure great suffering, die, and rise on the third day, Peter pulls Him aside and objects. "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you." Peter loves Jesus. He cannot accept a path marked by the cross.

Peter's Answer Reveals Both the Identity of Christ and the Mission Of His Church.

Jesus asks His disciples a question in this Sunday's Gospel. He starts with a safe and easy question. Who do people say that the Son of Man is. The disciples answer easily. Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets. These are kind answers. They place Jesus among great men of God, respected teachers sent from heaven to guide His people through hard and uncertain times.

Jesus asks His disciples a direct question. Who do you say that I am. Peter answers with faith. You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. We answer that same question every day, not only with our words but with our lives. How we spend our time, what we choose, and how we treat others all say something about who we truly believe Jesus is.

A mother comes to Jesus with a broken heart. Her daughter suffers, and she cries out for help. At first, Jesus says nothing. No words. No comfort. Silence.

We know this silence. We have prayed for healing and it has not come. We have prayed for a loved one who still struggles. We have brought the same request to God for months, even years, and heard nothing back. This is one of the hardest parts of faith.

A mother comes to Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. She does not ask for herself. She asks for her daughter, who suffers under a demon's power. She kneels before Christ and begs him to heal the one she loves.

Many parents and grandparents know this prayer. You pray for a son or daughter who no longer comes to Mass. You pray for a grandchild who seems to have walked away from the faith. You pray for a spouse, a sibling, or a friend who is struggling and distant from God. Sometimes these prayers continue for years without any sign of change.

The wind battered the disciples' boat through the night. Exhausted from rowing, they saw a figure walking toward them on the water and cried out in fear. Jesus called back at once, "Take courage, it is I. Do not be afraid." Peter answered with a request that still startles us today: "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." Jesus said simply, "Come."

The storm raged, the wind howled, and the disciples gripped the boat's edge in fear. Then Jesus appeared, walking toward them on the water. Peter's response is remarkable. He did not ask Jesus to calm the sea first. He asked to come to Him.

"Command me to come to you on the water," Peter said. Jesus answered simply, "Come."

The disciples stand before thousands of hungry people. They do the math fast. Five loaves. Two fish. Thousands of mouths. The numbers do not work, so they ask Jesus to send the crowd away.

We do the same thing every day. We look at our schedules and see no room for prayer. We look at our savings and see no room for generosity.

The disciples looked at the crowd and saw a problem. Thousands of hungry people, and five loaves and two fish in hand. The math did not work. They wanted Jesus to send the people away. Jesus saw something different. He did not ask the disciples what they wished they had. He asked for what they already held. Five loaves. Two fish. That was enough for Him to work with.
